Responsibilities of CMTC Tournament Directors And Role of Sponsors
CMTC’s variety of tennis tournaments offers players the full experience of the sport of tennis. All levels of players are welcome and encouraged to sign-up. Participants eagerly engage their competitive spirit and share the excitement of formal match play. In providing the opportunity for tournament play, CMTC aims to showcase talent, challenge, sportsmanship and fellowship for participants and spectators alike!
A tournament director or co-directors manage the preparation for and oversight of the assigned tournament. Responsibilities include:
Ensure that the signup sheet is available in the Pro Shop two weeks before the start of the tournament.
On the two nights before the start of the tournament, the tournament director should call or text each player to make sure the players can make all of the posted dates and times, weather permitting.
Once participation is verified, the tournament director prepares seeds and creates the match bracket. For assistance in determining seeds, the tournament director should check past results and is encouraged to consult with the Club Pros.
Once seeded players or teams are positioned in the bracket, a blind draw should be made on the night before the tournament for the remaining spots.
On match days, the tournament director in consultation with the Club Manager will assign players to courts and verify results once each match is concluded. At the end of each match day, results should be posted.
No chair umpire is designated for matches. Players are expected to make their own calls according to the standards of sportsmanship and calmly work out any disputes. If a dispute is not settled, the tournament director has full discretion to solve any controversy.
If weather causes a tournament to be delayed, the director will work with the Club Manager to re-schedule match play. The objective is to complete the tournament during the assigned timeframe. If another solution is needed, the tournament director will work with committee members and/or the club manager for alternative scheduling.
The tournament director will collect entry fees at the start of the tournament (if delayed only from participants who can play) and secures gift cards to local restaurants for the winner(s) and runner-up(s) using entry fee money. The tournament director presents the gift cards at the conclusion of the tournament final.
Tournament Directors cannot participate as players in the tournament they oversee.
A tournament sponsor might also be attached to the tournament. The sponsor advocates for participation and camaraderie during the tournament. Sponsors can participate in the tournament’s draw and match play.
